Deathly silence prevails in Kakopathar in Assam
Kakopathar | February 12, 2006 4:41:28 PM IST

A deathly calm has descended on the entire Kakopathar area following the violence in which ten people were killed.

Two days after the incident, Kakopathar still remained tense.

Only difference that there was indefinite curfew and none had dared to venture out.

The security officials had confirmed that there had been no fresh incident so far from any part of the district.

" We might do something tomorrow but not today. There are ULFA elements among the ordinary civilians and they have incited the villagers for the violence, " said Tinsukia district administration sources.

Sources put the toll at ten of whom nine were civilians and one CRPF personnel.

The Army and the CRPF were jointly patrolling the area to prevent any recurrence of violence.

With back to back bandhs, called by the ULFA and the AASU from tomorrow, the entire area would be hard hit as life would in all probability come to a standstill. There was already scarcity of essentials, specially baby food.

Meanwhile, AGP leader Jagdish Bhuyan, MLA, alleged that the district administration had not been cooperating with the family members of the victims.

Yesterday in Tezpur, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said she had spoken to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the latter had rushed to GOC-in-C of the Eastern Command Lt General Arvind Sharma.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had demanded court martial for the guilty. He had also offered job and education to the victim.

The CPI, AGP and BJP had separately demanded immediate resignation of Mr Gogoi.

The Government had come under heavy pressure as till today no senior Minister had dared to visit the area, and local MLA Pradyut Borodoloi had also returned.

The ULFA too had stepped up the heat. In a statement, the outfit said, " Instead of meting out justice to the people, protesting against rights violations, police have killed nine unarmed people in a brutal manner. " " We are going to further step up our campaign if the government does not stop such inhuman and barbaric atrocities on the common people, " AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacharyya said.
